A new version of the Intel Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager (HAXM) has been released, with new fixes and features.
As you already know, Android emulator runs a lot faster using our Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager with an Intel Atom system image. The HAXM speeds up CPU execution by an order of magnitude and it leverages Intel Virtualization Technology to make the an Intel Atom x86 system image (available for Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich) run much faster.
To help speed up the emulator the HAXM driver uses the hardware virtualization feature built into most of the Intel processors available in the last 5 years.
The HAXM driver speeds up both Dalvik and NDK based apps and is available for both windows and Mac. It can be downloaded from within the SDK manager or directly from http://www.intel.com/software/android. Linux users can use a Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) along with the Intel Atom x86 system image to get the same great performance increase.
You will find further information on how HAXM works to make your emulation faster and also a real time comparison between an Intel Atom based image with HAXM and a non Intel image in this video.
We’re now presenting the second release of HAXM that is live for download through the Android SDK manager. Among its bigger changes is the fact that HAXM R2 fixes the interaction with VirtualBox and also improves performance of OpenGL.
For the best Android emulation experience the following is needed:
Intel® processor with Virtualization with Virtualization enabled in the BIOS.
A complete list of supported processors is at http://ark.intel.com/Products/VirtualizationTechnology
Intel® HAXM driver R2 installed (Windows/Mac) or KVM enabled (Linux)
Intel Atom x86 system image (preferably Android 4.0.3 image)
Android SDK r20 which includes an updated emulator-x86 necessary to realize the performance improvements in the new HAXM R2 driver
